The use of asynchronous audio
communication devices and spaces, such as podcasting has many pros. Podcasts

Using podcasts as part of the
curriculum, it is “supported by Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as
Blackboard, eCollege, and Angel” (King & Cox, 2011, p. 52). According to
program coordinator Vicki Sutton, the availability of online learning using
Canvas LMS, ZOOM, and Skype is an accessible platform for those not in close
geographical location and this also makes it cost effective (Robinson, 2019).

Along with cons listed below,
are some enlightenments to lesson the con status. There must be a redesign of
instruction. Podcasting cannot become a lecture capturing system (King &
Cox, 2011, p. 37). This platform requires a new way of grading, a rubric that
supports deep level thinking. Therefore, this platform also requires the
student to think in new ways to prove knowledge understanding and
acquisition. (King & Cox, 2011, p. 72). “At the center of this paradigm shift
is the transition from instructor-centered to student-centered learning
strategies” (King & cox, 2011, pp. 52-53). Professor Cyndi Krebs also
referred to this paradigm shift of educational focus (Hort, 2019). She stated
that having an openness by the technology learning professor makes the
difference in technology skill acquisition.
Although the evolution of
technology may make podcasting development continually more interesting, it
may also steal time from academic learning so that device discovery may take
place (King & Cox, 2011, p. 61). According to Sutton, there is a vast differentiation
in technology capabilities, so it is important to support those that are less
technology savvy so that they can focus on the learning requirements instead
of the technology skills required (Robinson, 2019).

You've made a great list of pros and cons to using podcasts for educational purposes. The point you make about needing to support students in using this new technology is extremely important and relevant not only for podcasts, but also relevant for the use of any educational technology. Whenever using a new tool, our focus on educators could be on making sure that students are learning the objectives we are aiming for. The majority of their attention should not be on acquiring a new technological skill, as you mention and is referenced in the Robinson podcast. Great analysis!
ReplyDeleteThank you BridgetW. I struggle with the balance between learning the technology and focusing on the learning objective.
DeleteI love the layout for your podcast pros and cons, this would have taken me forever to figure out and I can only imagine the frustrations I would have experienced. This makes the reference to King & Cox (2011) in your post true in that learning the technology may take away from the learning of the content and the fact that educators must be careful to consider their learner's abilities as not to compromise the quality of the learning. I see the development of podcasts to be a great supplemental source for understanding course content. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteCLH, I still struggled with the layout structure. I could not get the middle column bar to move to the right. Blog formatting is still a bit of a challenge for me.
